Big Twin Racers War Horse

By Paul Crowe

Big Twin Racers War Horse

Got a note from Curt Winter of Big Twin Racers to let me know they finalized prices on their War Horse frame kits. Curt has been working on the War Horse for quite a while, originally building a bike called the Carver which has now evolved into the War Horse and it looks like he has it tweaked just right. Like a lot of us around here, Curt thinks the big American V-twins are a nice high torque engine looking for a sporty frame. Being a hands on kind of guy, he decided to build one.

Curt originally used a solid mount setup but redesigned the frame to use a rubber mounted engine which makes vibration less of a problem for both rider and components. With an aggressive rider position and loads of torque, this could be one sweet machine

According to Curt, the frame kit sells for $5300.00 and consists of frame, swing arm, gas tank and oil tank. The rolling chassis kit is $16,750.00 and consists of frame, swing arm, gas tank, oil tank, Ohlins suspension front and rear, Brembo brakes, radial master cylinder front, cylinder for rear, Black stone tec carbon fiber wheels and either 1 or 2 up seating for the tail section.

If motorcycle companies insist on putting the big twins in cruiser frames and ignore the sporty potential of these engines, smaller builders will do it themselves. Curt looks like he has a nice one here.

I’m liking this one. Very sporty, very streetfighter, plus you’ve got the torque to hammer away from traffic lights and carve up the corners. This looks like one hell of a bike. So good, I might even be adverse to caring how it runs.

Steve, funny you should mention S&S. My goal is to build a bike using their new motor so we can exploit the performance of the new X Wedge powerplant.

Seems to me this has already been done by somebody we’ve all heard of..
    a guy named Eric Buell.

Interesting bike but the aesthetics could be a little better; the seat looks too massive compared to the rest. The head light sits optically too high and the open headstock creates a strange openness. Work on the looks and it will sell a lot more. For 16.500 dollars I would expect something more refined design wise…

Daviabl, the difference between the engine that the kneeslider is commenting on and a Buell is that Buell uses a sportster based engine and we are using a big twin.

Steve – it would be great to see the X-Wedge in their bike.

I’d also like to see BTR use the Victory engine with the S&S hop-up kit. 107 ft/lbs of a flat torque curve (except for a slight dip before 2000 rpm).

The Victory engine also seems to have a more compact primary since it is gear-driven. The Victory sounds great too…..if I can only convince my brother to donate his Vegas.
