Yamaha pays employees to walk

By Paul Crowe

Quite a few companies have incentive programs for employees who use mass transit or bicycle or walk to work instead of driving, but you wouldn’t think a company that makes those vehicles people are supposed to give up would pay for the same thing. Well, Yamaha in Japan is doing it. They aren’t paying very much, 1000 yen (about $9.71 per month) but still, they’re doing it. They also have a program paying employees to buy a motorcycle or rent an electric scooter so maybe they’re supposed to give up cars and buy motorcycles.

Here in Oakland, California motorcycling is the cheapest form of commutting as well as the fastest if you choose to lane split. I figure I save about $6000 per year riding a motorcycle versus driving the car and not that much less over taking public transportation. I factored in gasoline, bridge toll, parking, and time of the commute. It wouldn’t be worth it for my employer to give me $10/month, I save over ten times that by riding a motorcycle.

Oh yeah, and it is so much more fun too.
