Randakk’s Honda GL1000 Endurance Special

By Paul Crowe

Randakk's Honda GL1000 Endurance Special

After my previous posts on a modified Honda GL1000 and GL1200, Randall Washington thought I might be interested in his bike. Randall runs a business by the name of Randakk’s Cycle Shakk, where he offers various parts and services for the Honda GL1000. His primary test mule for developing nifty new stuff is what he calls his Honda GL1000 Endurance Special and it looks very well conceived.

The bike is a 1975 Gold Wing with a long list of modifications. The original builder was Mike Barone who added things like a Ducati front fender and Ducati mufflers, Corbin seat, a modified Suzuki fairing and lot more. After Randall bought it, he mounted dual Weber carbs and then many, many smaller pieces to the engine and body to create what I think is a pretty sweet looking GL.

Adding pieces is easy, but adding the RIGHT pieces and making the whole bike look right and work well takes a lot more effort.

The Honda GL1000 fans seem to really like these old bikes and they do some excellent work. Nice bike.

Nice, downdraught webers. That actually leaves room for a real gas tank. He also must have done a tidy job of relocating all of the electric bits, maybe to where the original tank used to be. The bike really has some flowing lines and looks very RIGHT (I do not prefer Sportster tail lights but I understand why people use them). Great work.

Nice bike, and how cool a name is “Randakk”?
    ;’P

Maybe Honda should steal this idea, and come up with a Ducati Sport Classic competitor?

Sweet ride. Those early ‘Wings were pretty decent “standard” bikes to begin with. Too bad Honda’s last answer to the question was the execrable chopper-esque cruiser – the Valkyrie.

I love it…. Back in the 80’s I had a chance to buy an original 1000 cheap and I was trying to get my idea for making it into a sports/touring bike across.
Unfortunately I let some people influence me and never went ahead…
This bike is just like I pictured…… I’m going to take a shot at it.

    Wow. Nice GL…

Makes me think about a second look @ a ’77 ‘wing we have at work.. Very nice, less than 20k, has the vetter fairing and bags, but those are easily removed… All in all a nice original GL1000… all for the low price of $2295..
I think I’ll bring it home. 😉 I’m feeling inspired

    Nice Ride!

I am in the process of building GL1000 myself. If mine looks this good when it’s done, I will be Happy! I am doing a bit more to mine, but the “Cafe Cruiser” concept is what I want to end up with. This is great to keep me inspired!

Back in the late 60’s a fellow in California was putting VW engines in BMW frames. Goldwings always remind me of that lashup. Is anybody doin’ that lately? Great Publication you have. Thanks
