Honda CBX Custom Exhaust – A New Twist

By Paul Crowe

The straight 6 cylinder engine in the Honda CBX is a pretty sweet piece of machinery and there have been numerous attempts to make nice looking custom exhaust systems. I came across this photo of one custom built CBX with pipes unlike any I’ve seen before. Visually interesting. Would they interfere with cooling? Just a cool bit of creativity.

I assume the other side is basically a mirror image of this one?

Bitchin! I would chose a different headlight and get an internal throttle/clutch to hide those cables. Just me… Bitching bike though!!

That’s kinda sad. I respect anyone who can create something, but that’s just ugly.
It’s too bad because there are some truly phenomenal CBX specials out there….

I’d like to start working on my welding skills so I can make my own pipes instead of relying on the aftermarket or really talented friends.

Looks like another triumph of style over usability to me. Heating issues? You bet. But then the original design, a transverse, air-cooled six cylinder, wasn’t all that practical, was it?

3 into 1 into 3, I would have to wonder about back pressure issues.

Heat issues galore. Also why would you make something that is already as wide as a farm gate wider again. The diameter of those pipes is too large for good torque. A better design would be the curled Honda F1 exhausts, maybe with two small turbos down below…. sorry, that’s just me dreaming.

An example of building something just because you can, 6 cylinders on a motorcycle is simply overkill. This custom exhaust may be impressive from a fabrication standpoint, but it will cause heat issues and it is not attractive,It simply draws attention to the original excess of the bike.

I have yet to see a CBX custom that improved on Honda’s version.

Tanshanomi – These two come very very close IMHO.
