Dan Gurney Patents Moment Cancelling Four Stroke Motorcycle Engine

By Paul Crowe

Moment cancelling 4 stroke engine with counter rotating crankshafts

Dan Gurney, legendary racer, the man behind All American Racers and designer of the Gurney Alligator recumbent motorcycle, was just issued a patent for a new engine design. It's an upright parallel twin with counter rotating cranks called the "Moment Cancelling 4 Stroke." It's initially aimed at motorcycles, though he suggests it could be used in many other applications in the … [Read more...]

Welding Can Be Common and Welding Can Be Art

By Paul Crowe

Remember when we talked about practicing the hard stuff until you get good?

Welding may be common, but the welder doesn't have to be. How you approach your work makes all the difference. You can be that guy watching the clock, putting in the time and collecting a check, or you can set a higher standard. Scott Raabe is one of the other guys, he takes his work very seriously and turns out welds that make you stop and take notice. Some time back I … [Read more...]

Harley Davidson was Planning Multiple V4 Motorcycles

By Paul Crowe

Was this the Harley Davidson street fighter concept? A V4 powered monster to take on the world's best?

The Harley Davidson V4 prototype photos you saw here recently got me really curious. Just exactly what was the Motor Company planning to do with these new engines? Well, if you ask the right questions to people who would likely know, you begin to tease the story out a bit, and if true, this is just mind boggling. It seems Harley had some big ideas, and I know I would have given … [Read more...]

Harley Davidson V4 Engine Prototype Photos

Harley Davidson V4 engine prototype

In 2007, we wrote about the Harley Davidson Nova V4 engine project from way back in the mid 1970s. AMF owned Harley in those years and decided a V4 wasn't a profitable venture so they killed it. Then, in 2009, there were rumors of a new Harley V4 project. This one was supposedly around 1600cc, with a 72 degree V angle and output around 170 horsepower. Cycle World in May of 2009 … [Read more...]

The Flying Millyard V-Twin

By Paul Crowe

Allen Millyard's Flying Millyard Boardtrack Racer

An email arrived the other day from one of our readers who had just returned home from the Cassington Classic Brit Bike Show. He'd just taken a few photos of Allen Millyard's giant boardtracker, the Flying Millyard, built to house the engine he had created using two cylinders from a Pratt and Whitney 1340 radial. The result is a 5000cc V-Twin and it's a beauty to behold. … [Read more...]

Allen Millyard’s Incredible SS100 V-Twin

By Paul Crowe

Allen Millyard's absolutely incredible SS100 V-Twin

After starting on an article about the 5000cc Flying Millyard, which I will get back to, I came across a couple of videos of Allen Millyard's Honda based SS100 V-Twin and couldn't stop grinning. Have any of you seen and heard this engine and the bike it's gone into? I like big engines as much as anyone, but the SS100, built from two 50cc Hondas, is incredible. Listen to this! … [Read more...]
