Several times I've mentioned the shops building cars powered by motorcycle engines because the engines are just so powerful and their size so compact. I dropped by Z Cars and now I notice their Tiger Z100WR that is powered by two ZX12R engines and manages 0-60 in a mere 2.9 seconds. That's as fast or faster than most bikes. The plain old Z100 uses two ZX9 engines so it only … [Read more...]
Turbocharging
Speaking of speed, I came across this book and I liked it right away. The author starts by comparing Top Fuel dragsters to the Formula 1 cars of the late 1980's when turbos were king. Guess which cars put out more power per cubic inch? Formula 1, hands down, they were producing about 1300 to 1400 horsepower! And the neat thing about it is that the Formula 1 cars had about 90 … [Read more...]
Maxsym Engines
Maxsym Engine Technology is a British firm developing engines in various configurations, with their newest efforts aimed at developing 4 stroke twins that will be able to replace 2 strokes in applications where the 2 strokes have had a power and performance advantage. Their GP500 and GP600 are parallel twins with monobloc (no separate head) construction and a new patented … [Read more...]
Dolmette 24 cylinder motorcycle
Sometimes you do it because you can. Here's a company, Dolmar, that makes chainsaws and they decide to build a motorcycle powered by 24 chainsaw engines, the Dolmette. It's a blending of reality and a German comic strip character. The result actually runs, though starting is a bit of a chore with 24 pull starters. The power is delivered through a belt drive system that feeds it … [Read more...]
Revetec engine
There are a lot of alternative engine designs and technologies out there, more than a person can keep up with. This one, the Revetec, was pointed out to me (Thanks, Aaron), and comes from Australia. It's a boxer design but uses a central cam setup to harness the power from the piston. They have been working on this since 2001 and now have running prototypes and they've been … [Read more...]
Jim Feuling
With all of this talk of the Hayabusa V8, I neglected to mention the Feuling W3. Jim Feuling, who passed away in 2002, was a prolific inventor and engineer. I first noticed him back around 1990 or so when he developed 4 valve heads for the Harley Davidson Evo engine. I thought of him again the other day when I saw the rerun of a Biker Build Off episode where Cory Ness built his … [Read more...]
