American Honda Sets Up Shop in the USA

By Paul Crowe

Honda ad for American Honda in 1959While relaxing in the vast reading room of The Kneeslider research library, I came across this vintage ad from Honda Motor Company announcing the establishment of American Honda Motor Company.

The ad reads:

Gentlemen:
We have the honor to inform you that, owing to the rapid increase in the volume of our trade with your country and your many requests, we have recently established for the convenience of our customers American Honda Motor Company Inc. as our representative in the USA.

This new company will engage in quick and satisfactory service not only for sales but parts and repairs.

Will you kindly extend to the new company the support which we have had the honor of receiving in the past?

Yours faithfully,
Honda Motor Company, Ltd.

Who knew then, the Honda Super Cub pictured would be the harbinger of the huge wave of Honda motorcycles and cars to come?

It was October 1959.

The spec sheet indicates 213 MPG and a top speed of 43 mph for the super cub? Is that right?

I had an ’03 Honda Ruckus with the same size engine and didn’t get near that mileage or top speed… of course it was also reliable, quiet, and probably had cleaner emissions, but still. 213mpg!

Apparently a couple of guys named Honda and Fujisawa were pretty confident about the whole thing.

@ verbal: the sheet says 45 mpm which is meters per minute.

@freeman: i doubt it, since that would be less than 2 mph.
