2009 Vintage Motorcycle Days – More Event Updates

By Paul Crowe

AMA Vintage Days 2009The lineup of things to see and do at this year’s Vintage Days keeps getting better. Bikes we’ve written about on The Kneeslider will be there, but the weekend will be filled with a growing list of people and motorcycles for almost everyone’s interest.

Honda CB750There will be a presentation of “Birth of the First Superbike” detailing the development of the Honda CB750.

Vic World will be there to give you a rundown on “Restoring Honda’s Sandcast CB750,” Vic’s business, World Motorcycles, is all about doing sandcast restorations and if you want to know about what to do and look for, you’ll want to check it out. The Sandcast Only Owner’s Club (SOOC) will also be in attendance.

The American Motorcycle GirlsCristine Sommer-Simmons will be there to talk about her new book, “The American Motorcycle Girls.” If you’re interested in the early women involved in American motorcycling, this should be a don’t miss.

Craig Vetter will be there to give a talk on “The Future of Streamlining and Motorcycle Design.” He’ll also have a Gathering of Streamliners at Mid Ohio, which should be very cool to see, a Peraves Ecomobile is supposed be there. If you’re interested in super high mileage motorcycles, this is your spot.

Peraves EcomobileThe International CBX Owners Association will have a display with great examples of the straight 6 from Honda.

It’s just 2 weeks away, have you made plans yet?

CB750 the first superbike? Nah, that was just the warm-up act for the real thing; Kawasaki Z900. Sure the Honda was the first affordable modern big four, but it still was the kind of bike you’d meet the nicest people riding. The big Zee, on the other hand, was wild. ‘You’ll meet the most suicidal people on a Kawasaki’, as we used to say.

Been going there for years, but no auction this year? AMA website does not list an auction nor does J. S. Wood and Bator so I guess its Ebay for the bikes this time.

CB750 the 1st Superbike? The Laverda was faster, The Triumph was faster along with many more Im sure. This Myth has been told so many times uninformed people believe it.

Top speed for the CB750 is listed as 120 mph, Triumph is listed at 115 mph for the same year and handled better. A Norton is faster than a Triumph. Both are older designs that were slightly tweaked year to year rather than groundbreakers.
If it was simple speed more people would talk about Munch motorcycles which in 1968 went almost 140 mph but drove like a truck.
A precise definition isn’t a useful argument but a superbike would have to include a lot of things rather than speed. The bikes we have come to consider superbikes have good braking as well as speed, sophisticated design, and decent handling. Kawasaki 900’s were fast but that’s 3 years later.
I think a CB750 is a pretty good choice. It was highly innovative and turned the industry in a new direction like nothing else.
