Want to Build a Smartuki? Reserve a Smart Car Now

By Paul Crowe

SmartukiAfter all of the articles we’ve had on the Smartuki over the last couple of years, many of you have asked about building your own. If you’re up in Canada or over in Europe, the Smart Car has been available for a long time and Bill Allen can set you up with a kit to create your own little screamer but if you live in the U.S., the Smart Car has been promised for ages but except for a few that made their way here by various means, it hasn’t been readily available from a dealer.

Well, your wait is almost over. It looks like the Smart will be coming the first quarter of next year and if you want to have one of the first Smart ForTwo minicars so you can hack it up modify it and install some real power, you can reserve one now for $99.

The $99 is refundable and doesn’t lock a potential buyer into a particular color or trim level, … They can opt to make changes to their order and the $99 reservation fee will be factored into the total sum for the car.

Excluding destination fees, tax and costs of added options, the entry-level Smart ForTwo Pure starts under $12,000, the ForTwo Passion coupe is less than $14,000 and the ForTwo Passion Cabriolet is priced under $17,000.

Check on the price of a kit for all of the GSX-R mounting bits and add in the price of the car and you’re all set. It goes without saying, your warranty will be null and void but the car will be a heck a lot more fun to drive.

I remember when the planned price for the original Mazda Miata was under $16,000 – it sold for over $20. Before production VW claimed the New Beetle was going to sell for $11,000 and the convertible for 13. If the Smart actually sells for under $12,000 I’ll be flat amazed.

So seems like after nobody really wants them any more here in Germany, the leftovers will be sent to the U.S.

up here in canada, the smart car prices aren’t too far off that – from what I remember, $23,000 canadian will get you a convertible with every reasonable option – and will resell for something like $21,000 a year later! (until the supply catches up, or the masses get all they can handle) of course the brabus models would go for more, but we don’t get those. if only they brought the

remember – this car has been in production for years now, the costs are understood. this isn’t some car of the future – any guesses on what the camero will be worth when it gets built? (list price doesn’t count – we all know that gm can’t make money on a car to save it’s life… pardon the irony)

if only they sold the smart roadster here (they discontinued it a while ago)

THAT would make an awesome smartzuki!!

I’ve seen one of those roadsters around town, and WOW. They are quick enough as it is! In jet black, with bright silver trim, it’s hard to imagine a more sporty looking machine. A Smartuki with that? Sign me up!!! I might even learn to drive…
