The Kneeslider is now fully responsive!! Woo Hoo!! … Wait a minute, … what the heck is responsive? Well, the geeks among you already know, but very simply, we have taken the major step of making the site viewable on screens of any size, and what’s REALLY COOL is you don’t need to download any app! That’s right, we don’t make you get some special app just so you can check us out while you’re on the move.
For those of you who have ever tried to look at The Kneeslider on your smartphone, iPad, tablet computer or Kindle Fire, you know what happened, the website got squeezed to fit the screen and it was either hard to read or completely unreadable unless you expanded it and scrolled sideways. Lots of extra bother and darned inconvenient.
Some websites build special apps to take care of this, but you have to download their app and another one for each and every site you want to see. Here at The Kneeslider, we did the heavy lifting for you, you just glance at your smartphone or iPad and fire up your web browser and go to The Kneeslider, … Presto!!, it’s the right size. The sidebars drop to the bottom of the screen and you just swipe your finger to see the whole page. Cool, huh? The images automatically resize themselves, the menu on top stacks up, you don’t need to do anything special.
If you want to see it in action right now, just take your cursor, grab the side of the browser and drag it over to shrink the size of the browser window and watch as The Kneeslider moves around to adapt. Even better, take a look on your smartphone.
All of the motorcycle and parts listings do the same thing so you can check out what’s for sale with your phone any time you have a minute. Place a last minute bid on that bike you want, look for parts or accessories, anytime, anywhere. Neat!
OK, a little disclaimer, even though I’m all enthusiastic at the moment, not everything is finished, there is some tweaking and styling to do yet, so changes will still be happening and a few bugs are sure to be in there, but I had this much done and I couldn’t see any reason to keep it from you any longer. And this is just Phase One, once the site is pretty much set, I’ll launch Phase Two which will bring even more developments. See? I really was busy working hard to bring you a better website. Just wait until you see what I do next!
So, … what do you think?

You’re welcome!

Good work, Paul! For the geeks among us, you’ll now be accessible everywhere and nobody will be out of the conversation.
I tried linking to the site via one of my “mobile devices” — the Smith’s speedometer on my B50, but all I got was the usual incorrect speed and vibrating needle. Oh… I’m supposed to have an iPhone? Hmmm… all I’ve got is my old Motorola Razr phone, and it isn’t exactly “smart”. Looks like I’ll just continue to follow The Kneeslider here at my iMac and enjoy the site on a 27″ screen.
But the term “geek” really has little meaning any more, when even grandmothers have iPhones to keep up with their grandkids’ You-tube exploits. I feel like a points-and-condenser dinosaur sometimes… but I have what I need. As long as I can throw a leg over my bike, life is good.
Paul Crowe - "The Kneeslider" says
Well, the site is set up for you, too. Big screen, little screen, it’s all good.
We’ve been seeing more mobile traffic and it was way past time to make sure everyone could see The Kneeslider no matter how they were getting here. It’s funny, once you see a responsive site like this, everything else looks, … old.
todd says
You’ve been seeing more mobile traffic because my home internet is down (derned AT&T…).

Nicely done! Now I’ll have a better way to distract myself in the back yard while waiting for the dog to do her business.

When I first learned to use a telephone, we picked up the receiver and the operator said “number please!” We told her the number and she connected us. It was one step above Mayberry. Then in 1960 my town got the world’s first all-electronic phone exchange; the phone man put a dial on the phones and Mom could call her family in England directly. It was a huge technological leap that boggled us. Since then the leaps have been coming faster and closer together. Even science-fiction writers of 30 years ago couldn’t visualize what we’d have in our pockets today. I’m not one who has to have the latest technology, but I’m astounded with what is available, and try to imagine what we’ll have in the next few years. No matter what, The Kneeslider will continue to entertain and challenge us, and provide a fine community of like-minded enthusiasts. It’s the second site I visit each morning, after NASA’s SOHO site — sorry, Paul, but I just have to see what the sun is doing first. Hope you don’t mind. I do connect with The Kneeslider several times during the day.
Gerhard says
Jim,
My grandparents lived in a real remote part in the Western Transvaal area of South Africa, where a switchboard operator still connected you, well into the 1990’s. I also owned a Nissan 1400 pick-up truck, 1998 model. This was based on the Datsun Sunny series of vehicles that debuted in 1971 (I think). Anyways, another anachronistic product of South Africa, this was produced until 2008. It still had points and condenser ignition, carburettor with manual choke and no emissions equipment.
I digress, just to illustrate that while potentially a lot younger than yourself, I have first hand experience of archaic products, so I can happily relate.

I love the fact that I can now view The Kneeslider outside of work. I’ll be visiting much more often =D
Random says
Or, we can do it at work without being traced!
dave says
Now this is more like it! To have the Kneeslider easily available on any smartphone with reactive ability saves me from downloading another app. Always have loved the website, it inspires me to keep working on my motorcycle projects and to plan the next. Thanks Paul for all the hard work.
dave says
Oh, responsive technology not reactive, oh well
FREEMAN says
I frequent your site on my mobile phone, however, in my case my phone’s browser (Opera) already reformats everything to appear properly on the tiny screen. I know this is not the case for everybody so I thank you anyway for making your site more friendly!

murl'n says
well done sir, i applaud you and your efforts.
Sfan says
Well done Paul! Looks and responds perfectly on my Google Nexus phone. I really wish more websites would do this kind of “heavy lifting” rather than go the app route. As a bit of a tech geek, do you mind sharing some of the specific technical details? And what are your objectives for phase 2?
Paul Crowe - "The Kneeslider" says
Responsive coding instructs the page to respond to the size of the viewport, which is the actual screen size of whatever you are using, shifting and resizing content as necessary. Making someone load an app just to visit your site is a primitive way to deal with this and puts the burden on the reader instead of the website. Not smart. Responsive coding makes the visit easy and seamless. Why put up barriers when you can roll out the red carpet?
With rapidly growing mobile traffic, it’s becoming a necessity to adapt and any websites that ignore this trend will have problems very quickly.
If I told you, it would ruin the surprise.
Sfan says
Thanks Paul, I wasn’t aware of CSS3 media quieries…

Wow- thanks for the link, I missed this in my web classes last year…
Thanks Paul, your site rocks!
Both for being a geek, and for being a doer!
B50 Jim says
It seems that a lot of us in the Kneeslider community are old-timers trying to keep up with the kids and their newfangled inventions — like “fire” and that round thing they call a “wheel”.
Paul, you’re helping narrow the gap; the more automatic the technology, the wider its acceptance. The posts are all positive, and you’ve made a great site even better. Good on you!
clayton says
Paul, The Kneeslider is the Swiss Army knife of motorcycle news. There is something for everyone and it’s always informtive and entertaining. Keep up the great work.

The wife bought me an iPad for my 65th,July. (that age thing B-50) I guess I need to bring it out to the shop now just to stay connected to Kneeslider.
The “Smart Phone” will have to wait though…when I added up all of my monthly fees, cell phone, T.V., computer etc. I realised that I could get a couple more project bikes.

I don’t have any mobile devices, but when I get some, I’ll be sure to look at this site for the new improvements.
Right now, it seems just as good as always, here on my home computer.
Stephan P says
Thanks for the website, I’ve always accessed it from my iPad.
It looks the same, which is to say great. Are you sure those issues affected iPads?
Paul Crowe - "The Kneeslider" says
If you view The Kneeslider in landscape mode, it should look exactly the same, that’s by design, but if you rotate the iPad to portrait mode, the sidebars will drop below the main content. You probably view web content in landscape, wider across than tall, and that’s why it looks like nothing changed.
cwJ says
word.
Mark Lewellen says
I don’t like it. I use an iPad during the day, and now get none of the sidebar images etc. can I do something to go back to the old site?
Mark L.
Paul Crowe - "The Kneeslider" says
Sidebar images are below the content if the full width doesn’t fit the screen you’re using, just swipe your finger and scroll down. On an iPad, if you turn the screen sideways to view the page in landscape mode, you should see everything just like it always was before.
Rich says
Thanks for the hard work; it is much appreciated.
