Supercharged Norton 850 Commando

By Paul Crowe

Cruise through the motorcycles for sale and you see some interesting items now and then, like this 1974 Norton 850 SC Commando. I don’t recall seeing these around before, but according to the description, the Drouin superchargers were available through the Norton dealers at the time and this bike has the last version of the blower which was also equipped with the slide throttle fuel injection unit. Twin oil coolers, competition fairing and lots of other very nice accessories make this a pretty sweet bike.

Old Nortons, even very nice fully restored ones, are available if you look around a bit, but as I said, this particular setup isn’t one you’ll see for sale often. If you’re a Norton fan, you might want to check it out over on eBay.

This auction is over, you missed it, but how about another Norton instead?

Nice but I must confess that it gets to join a lot of other things from 74 that I had forgotten. I think you could find it pretty easy to talk me into riding this.

It has a “fuel infection” unit…

    Probably an accurate name!

Is that a Norton fairing? ‘Cause it sure looks like one of those vaguely BMW-ish aftermarket cheapies to me.

The fairing may well be aftermarket, the seat is a Corbin and the listing states custom oil lines and twin oil coolers, but it’s the blower and injection that make this bike a bit different since it’s something sold through the dealers at the time, at least that’s what caught my eye. I don’t know if these were widespread or as well known as the turbo setup on the Kawasaki Z1-RTC, which came a bit later. I hadn’t heard of them before.
