Royal Enfield V-Twin – The Musket

By Paul Crowe

700cc Royal Enfield V-Twin - The Musket
700cc Royal Enfield V-Twin - The Musket

What you see here is a 700cc Royal Enfield V-Twin constructed using two 350cc top ends. The whole bike appears to have come from the factory, or maybe the “special vehicle operations” section, instead of the mind and work of a creative and determined owner. Aniket Vardhan, the builder, still wants to come up with a better exhaust arrangement, than short open pipes, but already, the bike looks fantastic. Aniket calls the 700cc Enfield V twin, “The Musket”, to keep the vintage gun (ala Bullet) reference alive. This is very impressive work. I have to admit, when I watched the videos at the end of this post, I just started smiling and kept smiling all the way through. I really like this bike!

When you read the story of the build, take note of the process, … he had an idea and over many years kept at it, continued learning, continued working, he just kept going until the idea became real and he was riding this bike down the road. Far too many people hardly finish the idea stage before stopping, the work never begins. Aniket is a “doer,” and you know what I say about doers.

What normally happens when I get a tip like this, is follow up with the owner or builder for a few details so I can put together a story, but when I received Aniket’s response, I found he had already written the post and there was no need for me to add anything. So, I’ll just turn the keyboard over to Aniket and let him fill in the details of “The Musket.”

From Aniket Vardhan:

I was born in and lived in Delhi, India till 1999 when I came to the USA – ostensibly for a Masters in Industrial Design, but here’s the dirty truth- I came because of the sound of a Harley Davidson. Saw one once in Delhi, long ago, belonged to some filthy rich type, heard it start up and rumble away, wet myself publicly and resolved that one day, I would visit their homeland.

That didn’t seem likely at the time I was studying architecture in Delhi so the next best thing was to see what I could do with my Bullet, dearly loved as the only real motorcycle available in India back then (and perhaps even now). Thats when the idea was sort of baked into my brain, in the heat of 115 degree Delhi summers, over cigarettes, the smell of steaming cow dung and chats with biking buddies in the college cafeteria. I would build a V twin Enfield- it should feel right, with its long stroke, heavy flywheel, beautiful cylinder and head. Looked for any and every book I could find on vintage motorcycles, V twins, engine design, metal casting, machining- all of it. Bought an old enfield engine to use as reference.

700cc Royal Enfield V-Twin - The Musket

Jump ahead to 2002. I did in fact find myself in the USA, now an industrial design faculty member at an art and design college. On a trip to Delhi in 03, I picked up my old engine and brought it back Began to work on the idea on weekends, sketching, 3d computer modeling, measuring all internal parts, figuring out how to make the whole thing work using only standard enfield parts. You guessed it – came across the Norcroft V twin Enfield online, sort of destroyed me for a week. Then I figured, this is sort of fun anyway, so lets keep at it. I guess a couple more years passed, about 18 developments of my CAD model later, I was ready to start building patterns, and then, what do you know, the Carberry comes to my attention! By now, I was beginning to suspect that my next door neighbors were working on an Enfield V twin as well. As you’d expect, after a month of depressed moping, it was back to the basement again and I also noticed that my approach was rather different anyway, so why not put forward the way I thought made sense to me? Here is my rationale:

1. Keep it as ridiculously simple as the original Bullet engine. Therefore, no modern updates to major engine internals, so it still has the stock tappets, no hydraulics, and the stock piston oil pumps. Vintage bike lovers really like to tinker and tappet adjustment is almost a religous ritual for many.
2. Improve the oil filter – I machined a new filter housing which uses a standard modern cartridge type filter available at Advance. This is not a screw on car type filter – that doesn’t look right, so I have a finned aluminum housing I made.
3. Aesthetically, and this was very important to me being an industrial designer- keep the “vintage” and “Enfield” cues strong. I thought I would pick up from the last Enfield big twin- the Interceptor. The rounded profile of the front of the crankcase and pleasingly smooth and gently radiused forms of the castings and the cooling fins on the side of the wet sump. A wet sump simplifies matters and also ties in with the last Enfield big twin- the Interceptor Mark 2, which also had a wet sump.
4. I love the external copper oil pipes that are such beautiful visual elements on vintage engines, so I decided to incorporate that as well. This also helps to keep the oil cool as it travels through them, exposed to the air.
5. Keep the frame mods to a minimum and again keep the “vintage” feel going by keeping the single down tube- the Enfield big twins of yore had single down tube frames and handled well. The look of the “vintage V twin” I think is the very simple and elegantly “cradled” engine between two tubes- front sloping forward and rear sloping back.

700cc Royal Enfield V-Twin - The Musket
700cc Royal Enfield V-Twin - The Musket

I ended up quitting my teaching job last year, was getting the feeling that my heart was in projects like this. Since I wasn’t a machinist, I had to learn that too. This is where the stars lined up – a student’s family business is a machine shop close to my home, and his dad, Mr. Boggs was sufficiently amused by the project and my excitement to allow me to come in and start working on my project, early last year.

Well, it took about a year for the machining to get done, I learned everything as I went along and here we are. I have skipped all the “oh darn!” moments but there weren’t too many, just one huge one, when the first foundry I went to pretty much destroyed my patterns built over 3 years by leaving them near an open window in the rain…still get stressed out when I think of that- had to cut away and repair the whole thing after a couple of months of very evil thoughts.

But…the holy rider in the sky must have smiled upon me because from the very first firing, it runs like it WANTS to! It starts first kick every time! It isn’t quite as explosive as my 750 Triumph Bonny, but it has the very mild Bullet cams and stock 7:1 compression and small carbs, so a healthy increase in output can be expected with the usual mods. But, the torque is really lovely- cleanly pulls top gear at around 20 mph (!!) and accelerates from there without any snatching! I’m keen to try the new 5 speed gearbox the new Enfields have – my old one has 1-2-3 really low and a huge gap to top. My final ratio is 4.22 to 1 right now and she feels like she could pull even taller.

The amazing part is that its SMOOTH! It shakes much less than my Triumph and I think less than my old 350 single engine! That second piston is really helping to cut the vibes.

The sound? Beyond my wildest dreams, from those baking hot summer days in Delhi, ten years ago.

UPDATE: Don’t miss the update with full length exhaust and mufflers!

UPDATE 2 – 1000cc! – Aniket has redesigned the Musket to use 500cc barrels, see the announcement here.

Nice sounding rig. I think it could be a great kit for someone looking for a fairly inexpensive, unique project. Of course, the factory could step up and make it but that seems unlikely in today’s economy. Too bad, eh?

This is one of the best posts I’ve read on the Kneeslider (and there are tons of them).

It is hard not to grin and cheer along as Aniket got more fired up in parallel with the increased revs of his creation, belting out that amazing sound. That bike sounds incredible even with open pipes. (The quality of the HD sound has been lost due to open pipes and the louder is better crowd.) This thing sounds better.

The look of the engine is beautiful too and I liked seeing the bike’s styling mated with the big twin sound….not expected. If you were to hear it before you saw it, it would be a refreshing site once it passed!

What is the angle of the cylinders? It looks just less than 90

Aniket & Paul – thanks….this made my month and is getting me fired up for a great riding season.

    Dear Paul,

I can’t get over seeing my project up on my favorite bike website. Beyond my wildest dreams.
Saying thank you doesn’t even begin to convey my gratitude.
If any readers have any questions about the project, please email me at winsomniac@yahoo.com.
Have a wonderful riding season everyone!

I hope that this sees the light of day as an aftermarket kit from somebody like Hitchcock’s (England) Classic Motorworks(USA) or Samrat(India).. Or if Ankiet wants to do it all himself maybe he could gear up to it by first manufacturing his oil filter kit? I’d order a filter kit today,as would many other Enfield owners, just to help Aniket “get the first leg up!”

Reading that should be a sufficiently swift kick in the pants for some people to start doing instead of just posting.

There’s nothing in this world like riding your own unique work. I’ll bet Aniket knows that feeling very well.

    PS – “Thrown-togethers” aren’t work….

What an AMAZING piece of hardware! To my ear it’s Harley at idle & more like Ducati when the wick’s turned up. Anyway it looks & sounds Beautiful! Aniket you’ve done yourself up PROUD! & shown us bench racers & couch pilots what can be done.

Seeing as the basic R.E. design goes back about 50 years, would this qualify for Historical racing?

Gotta go. Gotta run those video’s again!! & again!

  21. Den says

    April 9, 2009 at 7:57 pm

That bike looks and sounds absolutely fantastic! The factory should seriously take a look at some of these v-twin Enfield specials, they could put out a bike quite quickly with very little r&d, triumph and BMW have done the modular concept before (oh yeah there is the Buell blast as well, yawn.) and it does keep costs down, I don’t have the time to do this kind of thing and would love the option of a 700 or 1000 twin from Enfield. This guy is super smart, handy, good looking and has a really cool bike, I bet he gets heaps of chicks (or blokes…if you’re into that sort of thing)!

    Hey Aniket,
This bike looks amazing! I have been a bullet fanatic since I was 5. Though I am now in canada I still have the bullet my dad bought when I was a year old. 32 years later, i still ride the old girl everytime i go to india.
I am amazed that at what you have achieved with this bike, its a real disappointment that a big manufacturer like Royal Enfield India still wont produce a twin like this one.
    very impressive work!

  24. Mehul Kamdar says

    April 9, 2009 at 11:07 pm

This is an excellent project that has significant potential for someone who wants to make a business of it. I doubt Eicher Motors who own Enfield are interested in anything of this sort, but there have been rumors of their wanting to sell the now spun off Bullet business for some time. Even if someone doesn’t want to buy Royal Enfield, an operation building and selling Bullet twins could be a successful business if the end result is like this particular bike, every single time.

I would be interested in seeing the data on the final torque and horsepower increase over a stock bike for comparison, Its a beautiful machine to be proud of. A lightly baffled 2 into 1 exhaust would look and sound excellent on it.
If I’m seeing this right, theres no air filtration of any sort or much room to have any?

There’s something about Aniket Vardhan’s Magic R.E. V-twin that reminds me of the Vincent V-twin. Maybe the 2 exhaust pipes on the right side? Perhaps the way the saddle floats over the rear fender? (even though the Vincent seat has a place for your Birdy Num Num to hug you tight!) While the Vincent has it’s engine more firmly packed in, the Musket could use a bigger BLACK tank. Maybe that will come in the kit?! Maybe not a dead ringer but faint echos of a bygone age.

But all that’s a personal thing. I’m sure that you can get one built to order if there’s enough $$ involved. Meanwhile, I’m going to go & run Aniket’s video’s again!!

My son and I just poured the first charge with my home-made backyard tilt-smelter last week-end. (What a riot!!!!) Well – A Harley person has to say “something” constructive so here it is. I once had a Series II 750 Interceptor way back in the day…..and I loved that machine more than most since (I wont say anything about AMF I promise). It was “balanced”, very easy to work on, had more than enough power – and I was proud to ride it down the street. I have also owned a couple of the older Triumph’s and a Commando. No comparison! Don’t get me wrong. I love the Harley Big Twin look, ride, and the sound – but dang it! It seems everyone has one these days and they are not “so” special to own anymore. I would much rather have something like this bike to putt around town and profile on to be perfectly honest. Ride the Hog on the long hauls or to pick up babes (well sort of in my dreams as I am just an old man now). This is really something different. Something outstanding – and “Built like a Gun”. Quality machine all the way!

Production wise, there’s no reason why I can’t build these to order, things to be looked into are the legal issues, EPA etc., pricing, what people are willing to pay for the motor etc.
Stay tuned for a website with info and details for interested people!

Kudos to your effort. Been waiting for a twin cylinder bike in India and hope your creation sees the light of day here. I’m really amazed that RE being the oldest production bike in India hasn’t tried to bring a twin to the country all these yrs. The best they could manage is self start and twin spark.

I saw a picture of this bike in the magazine and was stunned . Many years ago I had contacted both Mr. Drysdale and Mr. Bill Hurr because I had read that both of them had managed to make an enfield twin from 2 singles. I was hooked. Mr Drysdale did not want to pursue the matter and Mr Hurr and I have exchanged many mails in the past but the matter kind of fizzled out. BUT here , you have managed to create the magic all by yourself. I am very very impressed and salute you Aniket. I have long battled (with my very very limited engineering knowledge) how to manage the bottom end ; also the gear box – it probably needed extensive re-engineering. Also fascinating was how to set the firing timing – millions of questions 🙂
Would love to have a chat sometimes to learn a thing or two from you .
At this point, I own and ride a long cherished dream – a bike I searched 15 years for – a BMW Airhead twin 650 . But I still want to make my bullet twin someday.
Cheers and I doff my hat to you Sir.

Aniket–Great Job! This is a wonderful project, and it’s exciting to see the videos of the complete bike. Makes most of the rest of us feel a little under-achieving, I think. Contact me if you go to production and need help with detail design, drawings, parts manuals, or manufacturing. Right now is a great time to start–lots of machine shops around with idle machinery, and fab/welding shops with no work.

Gosh, its just fantastic to see new comments almost every day!
I’ll tell the truth- I’ve been disgustingly lazy with the website…what can I say, I’ve just been riding the old girl a lot, increasing the length of the ride gradually, almost 800 miles done. The last one was a 60 mile non-stop ride through some lovely countryside in Lithopolis Ohio, just lovely. She’s been chugging smoothly and sweetly and starting first kick.
I’m thinking hard about production though and am planning to machine a few sets of castings as tests to figure out an efficient manufacturing process and iron out any bugs.
And ofcourse, the website is coming, slowly but surely!
If you have any questions or suggestions, please email me at winsomniac@yahoo.com.
Thank you all from the big-end of my heart!

Words can’t describe the feeling of seeing someone achieve their dreams. For me…the older the bike the better. Your design of this bike is marvelous, and it’s overall sound is well tuned. I just watched watch your first start up of the twin unit, and it thumps at good pace. What was even more impressive was when you turned the fuel on, and wrapped the throttle.
She went from a mild mannered single cylinder (side by side), to this beast of a V-twin. I agree that this little puppy is a snarling beast, and will do some real damage.

Good job, and I hope to see one on a show room floor soon!

First off: Aniket, Beautiful work! To see your idea, planning and execuiton become flesh is truly a blessing and a satisfaction to be savored. Your work is an inspiration to all of us that have ideas for any projects, and that is not limited to motorcycles by any means. Again, Great work!

Second: What is up with the Harley-Davidson vs. the world animosity or stigma that seems to pervade the M/C community??? I have owned, ridden, and raced every flavor of Japanese bike since the 70’s, along with racing riding and wrenching on Huskys, Maicos, CZs, KTMs, Pentons, Bultacos, Montessas, Ossas, DKWs, Cottons, Greeves, Chapparals, Hodakas, BSAs, Triumphs, BMWs, two stroke, four stroke and rotary RE5s, RDs, GSs, FJs, ZXs, CBs, or whatever combination of consonants you might want to put together, and yes, Harleys too.

What do I ride right now?? I am blessed to have two beautiful bikes, a Softail Deluxe and a Dyna Super Glide Custom. It took me 30 bloody years before I got to a place in my life where I could afford the silly things!! Are they the best bikes?? Some say yes, some no. I say they are the best at being what they are supposed to be. They embody the soul and tradition of their heritage. The bottom line is, I love motorcycles, period. There are so many flavors, it’s like ice cream. If I had unlimited funds and a warehouse, it’s hard to say how many bikes of all types I would have in my collection and would want to ride them also. Sure they are two-wheeled sculptures, beautiful to look at, but they were made to be ridden and enjoyed! When I am out on the road I wave at all motorcycles, of all types, well, maybe not scooters, but scooter people usually don’t know what to do if you wave at them anyway.

Enjoy them all my brothers and sisters. They are mechanized freedom and therapy for the mind, body and soul no matter what name is cast into the cases.

    God bless, and FTW,
    MAXX

Jeez, what a nice rig. Looks right, sounds right, runs right.
Are the cylindres offset, or are the rods a “knife & fork” arrangement?
Roller crank? Time for more compression- nothin crazy, say 8.75-1, and a bit more carb & opening the inlet tract. Keep the kicker: electric starters are like radios: not on bikes!

I say, my dear Aniket, what a splendid motorbike! Gosh, I could almost smell the waft of Castrol R and fields of corn, of hops, and a quiet ivy-covered pub by a meanderin’ river in Kent….

Those were the days. When we still had an Empire.

Spent many a happy hour as a young lad on the back of a ’35 BSA V-Twin with wicker sidecar. Sounded JUST like your bike! On the pillion as the sidecar was usually occupied by a tall gangly chap who’s knees stuck out from each side of the sidecar, a ’40’s RAF leather helmet on his head, a huge and contented grin all over his face. Our driver was an ex-Navy (remember that, too?) CPO who had to be prised off the bike with a crowbar.

Those were the days. When we still had an Empire.

I love Harley but I’m mad at them at the same time. I love their craftsmanship, look, and sound, but they won’t make a smaller, more practical, versatile bike that I prefer. They don’t want to. They ignore guys like me, but some Harley owners, even some who are friends, rib me for riding a Japanese standard. I can see the bike I want Harley to make, a classic-styled standard with a smaller version of the V-Rod engine or an all-new DOHC vertical twin, and seating for two. At least Triumph knows I exist.

Aniket’s creation shows us how Harley could have made their Evo engines with offset cylinders and a greater V-angle, like Yamaha did in 1981. It makes for a smoother, better cooling engine, and it DOES NOT ruin the sound, now does it? Aniket’s bike sounds DIVINE!

I haven’t notice anything being said about the electrical system and especially what ,I did see that you said that it doesn’t shake like your triumph and I also might have missed the going price.
It doesn’t have the old electrical system like the triumph-where the positive was negative and the negative also does it have fuel injection,I heard that all bikes are going that way.I know that Triumph has.
thank you PS I love the bike and the cc’s-700 to a 1000

    Hi Aniket,

I just love the very beautyful bikes of the std Royal Enfield, coz of its awesome designe & the engine that impress every body, if u make clear idea abt the timing arrangement abt the twin engine it i’ll most helpful to fulfill my project of making twin sparks.

    Thanks

Aniket, Enfield needs a twin for the U.S. freeways. Your design would be the right one for the company. The company will sell 75,000 units this year (mostly in India) – but in order to grow they need a twin. Why not your design?
