New X Prize for High Mileage

By Paul Crowe

Automotive X Prize

After yesterday’s post about expanding our proven oil reserves, some seem to think The Kneeslider is an unrepentant gas guzzler. No comment. However, everyone may like this new Automotive X Prize that offers $25 million dollars for a car that gets 250mpg. Previous X Prizes for human powered flight and private space flight are done and claimed, the logical extension is to offer prizes in more areas.

We thought this would be a good idea way back when Spaceship One launched and sure enough shortly afterwards they were looking for ideas. The automotive prize for the 250mpg car does have one catch, you have to sell 10,000 of your high mileage vehicles.

OK guys, get out in your garage and start building.

“unrepentant gas guzzler” …..you’re “evil” too, right Travis?

Or were these topics mentioned? :

    – rate of oil consumption
    – establishing a higher standard for internal combustion engines in order to extend the use of this type of engine (particularly for motorcycles)

The X Prize link provided is an excellent read. It is worth your time.

can the project costs be maintained below the prize and the price per vehicle around $25,000.00 ?
