This press release from Buell touts the fuel economy of motorcycles as a reason to buy. As we’ve discussed here before, it doesn’t seem to be a driving factor in sales, at least not among readers of The Kneeslider. It has a lot to do with motorcycles not being primary use vehicles. High miles per gallon is nice but people buy for other reasons.
Peter Fritsch says
I am seeking to buy my first motorcycle and am looking to use it for my work commute. High mileage and the ability to drive at 75mph safely are the only two concerns I have. I think as gas prices continue to go up, you will see a continuing shift to my mindset. This has been the case in Europe for decades, where vespas and motorcycles actually outnumber cars, or so it would seem from the curbside. Gas has been $5 a gallon or more there for a long time. We are heading in the same direction.

Peter, if you don’t hang out with a bunch of squids, take a look at Kawasaki’s Ninja 250. For $2,999 you get a bike capable of 100 plus MPH, all day long capability at 75 MPH and 70+ MPG. In terms of commuter bikes this has to be the best deal in motorcycling by far. If your ego gets a-hold of you and you need something bigger most bikes only average 40 MPG or so, still better than a car.

buying our first commuter bike and like the 1980’s cruiser style…sometimes the CB honda styles…for under $2,000…..with best fuel economy that will do 80 comfortably…what do we buy? who has the high gearing/weight rationfor better mph rating?
