Major Renovations on The Kneeslider Underway

By Paul Crowe

The KneesliderJust a brief note to let you know we’re beginning some major renovations. At various times you’re likely to see things that look completely out of place and very unfinished. Since there’s a lot to do and just me doing it, please be patient. My plan is to have things sorted out as quickly as possible while still taking enough time to do it right, … at least, that’s the plan, and plans always go smoothly, … so let’s get this party started …

Now let’s see, … step one, I think I push this button first …

The Kneeslider RSS feed is one of few that doesn’t show full content in my RSS reader. I currently use Digg Reader, but it was the same story in the old Google Reader.

From your feed xml code (Which granted I don’t understand), it looks like there is only a truncated description for each article. Same thing I’m seeing in my reader.

I have to click each article and read it separately on your main site, kind of defeats the purpose of RSS! Is this behavior just on my end?

The heavy lifting is pretty much done and went well, now it’s going to be a gradual change as I decide what needs to go where. Some sections of the site have not been changed yet, they’re still a work in progress.

When really big websites change, they have a team of designers and developers doing the work while the writers continue writing. Here, it’s just me, so some things get put on hold because you can’t do this one little piece at a time.

      Thanks for checking in.

Since I made this comment, I’ve noticed the site has changed again. I did notice today that the pictures in the post on the rotary motorcycle appear to be pinched. As if you take a widescreen picture and made it square without cropping. Appears to be the case on other posts as well. I’m not sure what is up with that, but it could be my work computer (which is where I usually check in from) running an outdated version of IE (version 8). On the main page the pictures have the correct ratio. Probably just a problem on my end but figured I’d mention it. I normally use Opera at home, so if it’s messed up there too I’ll leave another comment.

The problem could very well be your earlier version of Explorer. I have tested the site in Firefox, Explorer, Chrome, Opera and Safari, plus on the Kindle Fire and the Android smart phone, and it seems to work as intended.

The site uses html5 and CSS3, both the latest technology for displaying pages on the web and they allow the site to do many of the things it does. The responsive nature of the site, where it resizes to fit whatever size screen you’re using, needs a browser that understands the code.

Trying to upgrade a site that still works fine with all earlier versions of all browsers may be possible, but it’s getting VERY difficult. Browsers should be upgraded for security reasons, if nothing else. When a company sticks with an earlier version of a browser in house, it’s usually because they have some software that won’t work with or hasn’t been tested with the later browsers.

I hope this isn’t a widespread problem and if others notice any other issues, please let me know so I can take a look, but after your comment, I rechecked again in all the browsers I have and it works fine. I don’t know if I’ll be able to fix that issue, but I’ll take a look.

UPDATE: Just confirmed, it is an IE8 problem. I’ll see what I can do.

Thank you for looking into this. The site works great on Opera at home. For how critical the IT crowd can be at my work, you’d think they’d update the browser, but it’s quite likely, as you say, a compatibility issue that is taking precedence over internet security. Go figure.

It’s great to see new life in what is still one of the finest “scooter” sites on the WWW.
