Kinematic Models – Mechanisms in Motion

By Paul Crowe

Oscillating Piston modelMost of you are probably interested in all things mechanical, not just motorcycles, the term gearhead is a badge of honor around here. With that in mind, you might want to check out the kinematic models website at Cornell University. The site has a lot of photos and diagrams of every sort of mechanical movement you can think of, anything that moves, usually while connected to something else.

While the photos are very nice, the best part of the site are the Quicktime videos showing the device in motion. I’ll warn you right now, if you like this sort of thing, you’ll spend way too much time over there but it is really cool. A few of those things have to be seen in motion because it’s hard to visualize from a static photo. Remember, you’ve been warned.

Be sure to check out the new motorcycle manuals and literature listings. I just put it together to make your eBay search easier and it's pretty sweet. It's fun just to browse though it. Check it out!

They have these kinds of things at the Boston Museum of Science, too. It’s fun =) I love the retro look of the models.

This will be an excellent resource for my teachers to use when explaining kinetic motion and how it works. And its pretty darned cool too!

Thats a good site, but just to add to the distractions try this website with a bunch of flash animations of simple mechanisms. The link is to the four bar linkage http://www.mechanisms101.com/fourbar01.shtml
