F1 more complex than MotoGP?

By Paul Crowe

Formula 1 steering wheelIt’s no secret that MotoGP has some pretty high tech electronics and gadgets on their bikes but this Formula 1 steering wheel is over the top. Look at this thing! An electronic display in the center along with enough knobs and switches to keep any geek happy. How much time does the average F1 driver have to peruse all of this at speed? Um, let’s see, was it the red knob or the green one, I can never remember…

The big display in the center-top display all the information you can image: engine revs, laptimes, speed, gear, …

The green-black button N to put the gearbox in neutral

The black-red LC button, to change setting of the launch control

The red-black L button, to apply the speed limiter in the pit lane

The yellow button radio is a switch for the onboard radio

Buttons M and Bo on the top are multifunctional buttons for display adjustments

The blue rotating button is to adjust the fuel-air mix in the engine

The button under air-fuel allows the driver to regulate the braking pressure on the front and rear wheels

The button above air-fuel permits adjustments to the power steering

The 3 rotating buttons on the right are all for engine adjustments

OK, they win this one.

You got it backwards, the green button fires the missles and the red one sprays oil behind the car.

I always thought the green one was for the ejection seat.

the thing that killed me was that there is a text window somewhere in there. during a gp weekend (practice or quali, i can’t remember) schumacher sr. was driving his balls off while germany played in the world cup. every time a goal was scored, the updated score was texted to the driver!

just imagine, pulling 3.5 g’s at the apex, feeding in throttle and correcting oversteer, and thinking… allright, we’re up a goal now!

almost as awe inspiring as rossi taking a corner, as few can, knee on the ground, hitting the razor sharp powerband of a 500 2-stroke, in the process of passing his great rival biaggi… one handed, waving the finger with his free hand!
