Ducati 1098-1098S-1098 Tricolore-1098R-848 Recall

By Paul Crowe

Ducati 1098 and 848 RecallDucati has issued a recall for Ducati 1098 and 848 models for a charging system problem. Please read below for the specific models and details.

Manufacturer: Ducati
Models affected:
2007-2008 Ducati 1098
2007-2008 Ducati 1098 Tricolore
2008-2009 Ducati 1098R
2007-2008 Ducati 1098S
2008-2009 Ducati 848
NHTSA Campaign Number: 08V638000
Potential Units Affected: 7130
Problem: Ducati is recalling 7,130 model year 2007-2008 1098, 1098S, 1098 Tricolore, 1098R, and model year 2008-2009 848 motorcycles. The motorcycle charging system may be adversely affected by engine heat and stop operating. This results in damage to the voltage regulator and ensuing battery discharge. This can result in damage to the motorcycle and a potential hazard to the rider, increasing the risk of a crash.

Corrective Action: Dealers will replace the voltage regulator, install a heat guard between the voltage regulator and the engine exhaust system, and install a modified battery support. The recall is expected to begin during December 2008. Owners may contact Ducati at 1-800-231-6696.

    I think this is ridiculous!
    I owned a ’94 900SS and a 2000 Monster and BOTH reg/recs died before 1500 miles!
Must be an expat from England does their electrics.

i bought my 848 a year ago this month… it caught fire whilst riding in may after 1300 miles.. ducati did replace the bike at the time leaving me to pay the on the road fees again.. my new bike broke down with battery failure injuly after another regulator failure…. just glad it never caught fire eh….. ducati recommended at change to the regulator by fitting a old 749 reg… well the bike rides… but my confidence is gone after the recall letter i have received today..

Not one but two recalls in one year for my 1098? WOW,first the rear sprocket and now the voltage regulator , I believe due to the fast rate to mass produce these bikes to compete with other bike manufacturers, are the reason for the faults in design, leading to the recall that you are experiencing. Ducati is not the only one, kowasaki’s concourse, has a rear brake pedal recall, with no solution to fix it yet, what is going on..

“Demand (misguided customer?) driven” design cycle is about to end, soon, I hope.!
In the real world, perhaps only way down the road unfortunately, we will have well designed, nimble, easy to control, easy to pay-for motorbikes, 350 to 650 cc’s, plenty of power and speed, that DO NOT weigh a ton, DO NOT cost a small fortune and DO last more than a few years or (several) hundred thousand kilometers.
Until then, Ducati (Tricolore desmo) is not one of them. Check what you paid against what you got. 🙁 .
