Honda XR600 9 Cylinder Radial Engine Update

By Paul Crowe

Ian Drysdale thought we might want to know a little more about the Honda XR600 based 9 cylinder radial engine Russell Sutton is building that we mentioned last year, so he sent some more up to date photos. Ian's working on the crankshaft and rods for the engine while Russell keeps himself busy with the rest of it. Russell really likes radials, he says his personal favorite … [Read more...]

Fiat MultiAir Engine – Better Mileage, Lower Emissions

By Paul Crowe

With the constant talk of electric vehicles being the next big thing, it's interesting to see how much development is still being done on the good old internal combustion engine, the Fiat MultiAir engine is a good example. The Fiat MultiAir Engine, uses a solenoid valve to control oil flow to a hydraulic lifter that actuates the intake valve. The mechanical cam actuating the … [Read more...]

STIHL 4-Mix – Fuel Lubricated 4 Stroke Engine

By Paul Crowe

Since we've been looking at some interesting engines lately that take the road less traveled, a comment by rafe03 on the Ellwood Hybrid story pointed to this hybrid that needs no oil in the crankcase and no oil pump either, but it operates as a 4 stroke. According to Parker, the 800cc MotoGP bikes are making about 240 horsepower or 300 hp per liter, pretty high … [Read more...]

Solution: External combustion engines can run on an extremely wide range of fuels, whatever is available, they are true multi fuel … [Read more...]

Ellwood Hybrid – Single Cylinder Reed Valve Intercooled 4 Stroke Engine

By Paul Crowe

All sorts of interesting custom bikes and engine projects are coming out of Sweden all of a sudden, or at least, I'm just coming across them, and John Ellwood thought we might like to see one more, it's his Ellwood Hybrid, a single cylinder, 4 stroke with reed valves, from a 2 stroke, mounted on the crankcase directing the crankcase pressure to charge the intake twice per power … [Read more...]
