Bureaucrats: a particular variant of the human species not happy unless they are meddling in things, especially when their meddling involves placing limits on others. The European Union’s energy commissioner has proposed a 100kph (62mph) speed limit throughout Europe, including Germany where the famous Autobahn runs wide open. The European economic and social committee (the name alone makes me nauseous) is advising the energy committee on proposed legislation and recommends the limit to increase safety and save gasoline. It’s for everyone’s own good of course.
Washington takes a back seat to no one when it comes to bureaucracy but the Europeans seem to have a special flair when it comes to committees and commissions, there’s an air of superior condescension when they make their pronouncements. Productive employment for bureaucrats would help, but what would they do?
Those of you living in countries affected by this who would prefer not to have the new limit should speak up before it gets rolling. Perhaps you remember the song, “I can’t drive fifty five.” Let’s see, how about “I’m so blue at sixty two?”
Thanks to GaijinBiker for the pointer.
