BMW has issued a recall for 2008 BMW F800 GS motorcycles for a problem with axle shaft wall thickness. Please read the details below.

NHTSA Campaign Number: 09V088000
Problem: BMW is recalling model year 2008 F800 GS motorcycles. The axle shaft wall thickness may not have been manufactured according to specifications. If the wall thickness was not sufficient, the axle shaft could deform and could break increasing the risk of a crash.
Corrective Action: Dealers will inspect the axle shaft assembly and replace or repair the necessary components free of charge. The manufacturer has not yet provided an owner notification schedule. Owners may contact BMW at 1-800-831-1117.

Meh, it’s the first year of production for the bike. Sure, BMW has experience in the big dual sport category, a crew of genius-level engineers and a quality control team that can’t scheisse without muscle relaxants. But if anyone expects the first run of any new product to be flawless, they’re being foolishly optimistic. New ideas are great. Year old ideas that have been refined are nearly always better.

nothing to do with the design. it’s a problem with management, if they don’t make what’s design. may be they opened a new factory or smtn.
still, I don’t remember the last time i heard that smtn wasn’t made to specifications.
with today computer controlled technology, this is weird!!

There are robots that check that sort of thing these days. I think in a bike as expensive as this, it’s rather inexcusable. But then again, german cars aren’t very reliable these days; it that the case with german bikes?

They are just saying it’s not made to spec.. not that it’s in danger of failing.
The axle wall thickness is probably designed 3 times thicker than it needs to be.
The recalled probably ones have only 2 & 1/2 time more than needed 🙂

Nothing new here, check out the failure rate of BMW’s final drives during the last 3 Ironbutts. If I remember correctly BMW was about 1/3 of the entries and 2/3 of the mechanical failures.

It’s chain drive, not shaft drive.. so there is no FD.
