Ducati CBX Custom by Dan Uhing

September 24th, 2007 by Paul Crowe - "The Kneeslider"

Dan Uhing and his Ducati / Honda CBX custom

Flipping through the new October Motorcyclist magazine I saw this very sweet Ducati / Honda CBX custom. It’s the work of Dan Uhing of Nebraska who owns quite a few CBXs and got the desire to do a special. The Europeans do their share but he didn’t like the flip up tail that seems common on much of the work over there. Instead of going that route he bought a lot of Ducati parts and started mixing and matching.

According to Dan, Ducati contributed the wheels, swingarm, rear suspension assemblies, subframe, tail section and exhaust cannisters. The frame, tank, instruments and of course, the inline 6, all come from the Honda. Lots of labor and creativity were added and you get one of the nicest CBX customs around, understated and extremely cool.

Dan says he only has about $5000 in it, not including labor, naturally, which is one helluva deal but like I said before, your perfect custom motorcycle is always on sale, it’s just rarely for sale all in one place. Some assembly may be required, like this example.

I found the above photo on the International CBX Owners Association website, a great place to check out if you have a CBX or want one, lots of good info over there.

If you’re interested in a Honda CBX for sale, there’s usually a good selection, but I think the price might have just gone up.

Paul - thanks for digging for more information about this bike. Motorcyclist just gave us all a teaser, wanting more. TEASE.

This post is a great follow-up to the previous one about Honda stepping up with an Uber-Cafe-Muscle bike. That concept just might get Yamaha to produce version2 of the V-Max. This CBX just might get Suzuki to continue to think about the in-line six Stratosphere.

Great job Dan….it has a build quality solid enough to look like a limited-edition factory run, but unique enough to say no way, this is a very special, one-off. It’s not easy to combine old and new designs together and make the overall bike look good.

    Nice, very nice.

  3. OMMAG Says:

Great work finding these outstanding builders…..

  4. Richard Says:

That looks just perfect! I want it!

  5. PigIron Says:

Since the frame and engine are still Honda I think calling this bike a Ducati CBX is a bit of a stretch. How about Custom Honda CBX with a Ducati swingarm?

  6. Bryce Says:

Nice looking bike. I didn’t know there was a way to make that engine look bigger, but this does it, and that’s a good thing.

  7. Larry Says:

Beautiful job, great work, now check that rear tire pressure!

  8. GAMBLER Says:

    excellent work!

  9. Sean Says:

Not such a big fan of the blingy wheels, but everything else screams “GORGEOUS!!!”

  10. Paul N Says:

Wow! That thing is perfect, perfect, perfect! True retro styling and gobs of style with all the modern technology that anyone could want. This website does an outstanding job of identifying those who deserve the attention of the motorcycling community.

Now, if I could just figure out a way to graft a gsx-r front end onto my 1983 Virago…

very nice changes he’s made. this is probably just me being my typical picky self, but nearly every cbx custom that retains the cbx frame still uses the original tank. personally, that tank just bugs me.

*this judges score: 8.2/10 (at any price. for $5k this is an incredibly high score from me.)
*after altering the tank shape and a incorporating few tweaks to the headlight/instruments this bike could well score a 10…. maybe a 10.1!

this is one of the best CBXs I’ve seen without a harris/moko/egli frame. (and the additional $10k that involves)

  12. Willie Schmitz Says:

Great custom bike, well done. I’m with PigIron, it’s a Honda.
This bike is an inspiration to build/buy a custom bike of whatever your choice might be. Some money, some imagination and some effort and any of us could be cruisin’on a real eye turner.

  13. Wes Says:

Us CBX owners i guess are our own breed. That is an outstanding job. You are going to have the pic pic and na sayers but you are the one with the bike and the gratification you have knowing you built it is all you need. I have 6 CBX’s and would love for one of them to look like that!!!

Really nice bike you have Dan. If you ever want to sell it please contact me.
