Welding may be common, but the welder doesn’t have to be. How you approach your work makes all the difference. You can be that guy watching the clock, putting in the time and collecting a check, or you can set a higher standard. Scott Raabe is one of the other guys, he takes his work very seriously and turns out welds that make you stop and take notice.
Some time back I wrote a review of Cal Newport’s book, So Good They Can’t Ignore You and another on deliberate practice. Here’s a great example of taking a skill that’s used everywhere and applying those principles.
Geez, that’s nice work!

Jeebus those are beautiful. I’d show you my welds but you would need eye bleach.

Unbelievable. I most robot welds are not that good.

A welder that puts pride in his trade will always do wonderful things.
I see it daily in our workshop (TIG on Ni based superalloys), the ones who love what they’re doing reach results that their colleagues can only dream of.

looks great ! looks like you’re ready for something more difficult . something like reaching in a hole only big enough for one arm that is in an armbar, and pressing your face up against your helmet , only being able to see out of the outside half of one eye , reaching to the left about a foot and a half , missing the first pipe that’s in the way and welding the second pipe , the six o’clock to 9 o’clock section with a mirror looking down and welding up with the welding rod twisted like a corkscrew and controlling in with your free hand which can only get as close as your chin .
