If you haven’t checked in with the Two Stroke Shop lately, you might have missed this, the TSS1100GP Kawasaki Triple project, a nice little modification of a Kawasaki ZX-10R, where they remove the engine and replace it with a brand new 3 cylinder, 1100cc 2 stroke. If you remember, these guys have been building the TSS RSS500, a nice little 2 cylinder screamer, and having all of this neat 2 stroke know how, they thought, “Hey, why not add another cylinder?” I like the way they think.
This interesting bit of engineering is aiming for 250 rear wheel horsepower with twice the torque of the inline 4 ZX-10R engine being removed while weighing in at 55 pounds less. Do you think that spells fun?
They’re planning to build 5 of these engines and if you’re looking for something really special, they can put together twins up to 1146cc; triples up to 1725cc; and fours up to 2200cc.
Thanks for the tip, Andrew!

Holy crap! I’m not really into two-strokes, but that would just be crazy fun.
Tin Man 2 says
Direct Injection has opened up the 2 stroke world again, Light Weight,High Power and less complex, Whats not to like.
Kenny says
Thats the largest 2-stroke I’ve ever heard of, aside from the 2-stroke diesels they used to use in tanks! And they’re offering to make even bigger ones! Am I wrong in thinking that its going to be highside central.
Any idea what the powerband would be like?
Wave says
Actually, I’d have that 2-stroke twin in the back of my Beetle! Would be hilariously amusing, and nobody would think twice about the smoke! The 2200cc 2-stroke four is clearly only for the criminally insane, though. The triple is already too much power for the street, and it wouldn’t fit into any racing categories, except perhaps the 2-stroke land speed record!

I’ll be happy to take the left over ZX-10R engines

What is “too much horsepower”?
What does horsepower have to do with highsides?
Gildas says
With a turbo to compensate altitude, it would even make a really interesting light acrobatic plane engine… Endless possibilities!

“too much horsepower” is something they found in GP racing. They could get better lap times by cutting back on the horsepower. Go figure. A bike that is easier to ride and control is a faster bike. These engines would benefit from ride-by-wire technology – then again, with so much capacity you wouldn’t have to tune it so peaky. You could tune it for torque and smooth delivery and it would still have plenty of horsepower.
Me? I’d take a 70 HP 500.

Now I know why the Ducati GP9 (800cc ) records lower top speeds than the GP6 (990cc), why World Supersport (600cc) lap times are lower than World Superbike (1000cc/1200cc) lap times, and why 125 GP & Moriwaki MD250H racers never highside.
OMMAG says
Too Much HP ….. ?
I wonder what would happen if you were to modify an old Mach III for fuel injection?
B*A*M*F says
I want something like this. I’d gladly take half the displacement, half the power (or less even), and in a non-sportbike bike. I want a quick, excellent handling, light weight standard bike.
crinklesmith says
Wow, 250hp is quite a bit. I imagine with DI, they could tune it so its not too pipey. All that power goes through that little tiny primary drive?
Miles says
Why can’t I power my small car (<2,000lbs) with that?
This looks awesome, wonder what kind of oil pump that uses?
My friend said his brother was working on some older semi-trucks with 2-stroke that were super-turbo-charged, sounded really awesome.
Ando says
That bike looks awesome but….
It makes me miss my Water Buffalo : (
…And it only had something like 70hp.
Kenny says
Any word on how they’re going to mount the exhaust? Can’t imagine there would be enough room to fit three expansion chambers in the frame or around the bodywork, Thinking they’ll be about the same size as a LC350 YVPS.
A naked 250hp zx-10r streetfighter?
todd says
They could use straight pipes (no expansion chambers) with mufflers. With such large capacity they won’t need to resort to typical small capacity 2-stroke measures to gain back torque. They could also run fairly short duration exhaust timing to limit the amount of wasted fuel and, again, gain torque. At least that’s what I’d do on such a large engine.

Hm, plenty of snowmobiles with similarly sized 2-strokes, at least prior to the 4-strokes catching on. Some used a single expansion chamber and a 3-1 manifold, but all the high performance ones used 3 pipes. This motor looks a little like a Polaris triple with a transmission a la motorcycle.
As for the truck motors, look up Detroit Diesel. They were the hot ticket back in the eighties, supercharged for scavenging, and often turbocharged on top of that. Most common were 6 and 8 cylinder models, but there were some trucks with V12s running around. Tons of smoke, noise and power, terrible fuel mileage.
Roy says
wow, that is flat out bad ass!!! billet cases, gp power valves, insane multiport cylinders. i’ll take 10, just need more money. just think all the crazy projects these could power!!!
ScotDuke says
Sounds like a great idea – clean two strokes – soon everybody will want one! Let’s hope the fuel injection works better than the Bimota 500 of the 90s though.
One other thing, there are lots of two stroke diesels around. A lot of huge ship engines are two strokes. Two stroke diesels were also used in locomotives in Europe and in dump trucks and wheeled loaders and other construction machines. The Detroit Diesel two strokes used in construction machines offered a high power to weight ratio, though they were noisy, had high fuel consumption and blew turbos and head gaskets regularly.
Billy says
Thats awesome, those look like CP industries cylinders and heads. The cases are definitely banshee/RZ350
thunderdog says
Direct fuel injection will save the two stroke. Look at the 09 bombardier ski doo DFI snowmobiles, less weight, less emissions and more power than the comparable four stroke. Google etec by bombardier.

just do it guys,i’ll gladly buy them and fit them here in the uk,the ultimate 2 stroke, not a shortage of buyers,as for race classes ,just start a series -when enough are produced],i know an experienced isle of man racer who’s ready to cane one of these around the island, please get in touch
