This year, the Lake Elsinore Grand Prix will be run in and around the city of Lake Elsinore, California on November 7th and 8th, much like the old days. Some sections of the original track will be included in the 7.2 mile course.
In recent years the race had been turning into your garden variety MX race, the change this year has many long time racers smiling and Bryan contacted me to help get the word out. It seems quite a few racers who might like to participate haven’t yet heard the news.
Some of you may remember The 1971 Elsinore Grand Prix was documented in the film “On Any Sunday.” The race was won by Malcolm Smith, while his good friend, Steve McQueen, who entered incognito under the name, Harvey Mushman, finished 10th.
If you want to sign up you can pre-register at the link below. Sounds like a good time.
Thanks for the tip, Bryan!

I’d like to point out that we have a big (relatively speaking) motorcycle rally, just south of the border, that same weekend. The place is Puerto Penasco or Rocky Point in english.
In years past we have had upwards of 10,000 bikes come here, now with recession and everything we might not get as many, but we are still counting on a good turnout.
Please check out the website. http://www.rockypointrally.com/
You are all invited, see you in November.

Over the last few weeks I’ve been trolling YouTube watching vids of vintage scrambles and enduros. Frankly I’m finding them a lot more entertaining than the made for TV stadium events that the sport has become.

Jim, the event atmosphere in years past was different, the riders were different, everything was different, … I think a lot of us would like to turn back the calendar and revisit those days. Maybe races like this will give us a chance to do the next best thing.
Jim says
kneeslider: I don’t know what’s happening on the west coast but in the northeast motorcycles are horning there way into what had been previously automotive events such as rallies and hillclimbs, with motorcycle divisions being added. Add to that NETRA’s full schedule of scrambles and the olden days are around. The racing is much better than the typical stadium event, but you need to realize that you’ll only see a couple of sections, and not the whole event.

Who didn’t want to be Steve McQueen, Elsinore was mythical to a Midwesterner. My first race was a pasture scramble on a BSA 500 single and for a moment I felt like I could be like Steve,

Wow, Im glad its happening again!!!! We are gonna get up there for sure!!! We will try to get some vintage Triumphs ready…….:)

You guys are a little mixed up. The Elsinore footage in OAS was from the 1970 event. In 1971 John Desoto won both days overall.

I personally can’t wait for Saturday. I can remember this race from when I was a kid. It’s going to be an honor to be a part of it.
