Ilmor Engineering to build MotoGP engine

By Paul Crowe

Ilmor Engineering, famous for racing engines used in both CART and Formula 1 racing is developing an 800cc, 75 degree V4 engine with pneumatic valves and a rev limit in the 17-18k range for the 2007 MotoGP season when the new downsized engine rules take effect. Engines will be available for lease to various racing teams. Dyno testing followed by track testing will begin in the spring.

Ilmor designs, builds and develops engines used in other racing leagues. The process is paid for by a major manufacturer that badges the engine under its own name. The Honda engines used in CART and the Mercedes engines used in F1 are Ilmor designs which gives you an idea of the capabilities and sophistication of the Ilmor efforts. It also gives insight into what is necessary to race at the highest levels whether on two wheels or four and why the KTM pullout earlier this year was such a blow to the Kenny Roberts Proton team.
