You probably know more than a few women working on motorcycles and cars, getting their hands dirty just like the rest of us, so why not give them the recognition they deserve? The Kneeslider gets a lot of military readers, too, and I know there are some women wrenching on trucks, tanks and jets out there, how about signing them up? Sarah Lyon Photography has a project under way to photo some of these women at work.
The project intends to give positive representation of women working in the non-traditional labor field of mechanics. The possible type of mechanic includes, but is not limited to: automobile, motorcycle, helicopter, army vehicle, bicycle, scooter, etc. Sarah plans to travel around the country on her 1978 Yamaha motorcycle to shoot the photographs during the summer of 2006, to prepare the calendar for a 2007 release.
This calendar will offer an alternative to the typical shop calendar to show women can work in this field like any other. If you know of a woman with a wrench that might like to participate, let her know about this. I bet some of our female readers here at The Kneeslider would be perfect! I think it’s a great idea. Now if they can get Jessi from Xtreme 4X4 TV …

How much do you want to bet that she’ll skip all of the average looking, slightly overweight, middle aged women mechanics? It’s a shame that it will probably still be marketed to men who want to see a flash of flesh with some strategically placed gease marks.

Actually, Todd, the calendar is not going to be specifically marketed to men. The purpose of the calendar is to show real women mechanics working in their shop environments — this includes all types of women regardless of age. I received a grant from a women’s arts organization in Kentucky to help with the project, and my motivation for creating the calendar is to tell stories of women who are in the non-traditional labor field of mechanics. I have worked on vintage japanese motorcycles since I was 19, in predominantly male environments. I find the stories of women who work as mechanics inspiring, and I think that other people will too.

PLEASE??? Where is this calendar at?? You would have no idea. Not some fetish, this’d be the kind of woman I’ve dreamed of my whole life. I may never have the pleasure, but it sure would be consoling. As well as enlightening, and… Just plain cool.

What might help out is if you accepted PayPal !
I was set to order….but I cannot even remember the last time I wrote a check for anything. 😉
Good concept though!…I too support the idea.

She does accept PayPal, just click through a second time and you get to that page. Maybe not the clearest arrangement but it is there.
