AMA Superbikes

By Paul Crowe

One of the distinguishing features of AMA Superbike racing is the wide disparity of capability on the track, both equipment and rider, during the race. If you have ever attended one of the races in person, you see it very quickly before even a handful of laps are complete. I have described it to others as having two races run simultaneously, one with a large number of riders and another with far fewer who are on a completely different level. Watching Mat Mladin yesterday gave an indication of what I mean when at the redflag restart, he babied his clutch to save it and was in 21st position. A couple of laps later he was 10th and then minutes later he was 4th. There are times when lapped traffic can make or break the finish order and it happens in every race. I wonder if there is a better way.
