1970 Triumph 1000cc 4 cylinder

By Paul Crowe

4 cylinder 1970 TriumphWhile looking through the listings for the Bonhams auction I mentioned the other day, I spotted another curious entry, easy to go by unless you’re looking closely. The listing has this as a 1970 Triumph which is the year it was put together evidently, though the frame is a 1962. They managed to mount two 500cc Triumph Daytona twins in the frame for a 1000cc 4 cylinder. Built by Rod Coates, ex-Triumph of Baltimore Service Manager and 1950 Daytona junior race winner on a Triumph GP, this is a street bike that supposedly was ridden to some degree. It sold for $8000. Give a guy tools and time and watch what happens. Can’t tell much from the photos about how things were set up but it looks interesting.
