Harley Davidson going retail in China

19 January 2006

Harley Davidson is heading to China where they plan to announce by this summer the opening of a retail outlet for their big V-twins. But an article yesterday mentioned a few of the drawbacks to cruising the open roads over there. A Hong Kong dentist wanted to ride with a group of 35 bikers to [...]

Chinese motorcycle exports

4 January 2006

A news item just crossed our desk about Chinese motorcycle exports. Chinese officials were quoted as saying they intended to rectify the disordered export market resulting in low profits for the Chinese motorcycle companies. You need to remember, and as the news item reminds us, this “disordered” market has been the number one exporter of [...]

Business in a flat world

27 November 2005

Way back in April I mentioned this book, The World Is Flat: A Brief History of the Twenty-first Century, as a good way to understand the new global business environment. With Chinese growth, GM cutting 30,000 employees and all of the other happenings, everyone else is reading the book now, too. It’s #4 on Amazon. [...]

Counterfeit motorcycles seized at Milan show

21 November 2005

The Italian finance police have seized 11 counterfeit mopeds at the Milan show after complaints from a Czech company (which I presume is Blata) over the fakes. Three Chinese citizens and one Italian were charged with patent violations. The motorcycles were perfect copies and even had the company trademark. The number of Chinese counterfeits is [...]

20 November 2005

In another longstanding lawsuit with a Chinese company, General Motors has settled with Chery, the company producing a copycat car with a similar name to Chevy. Details were not disclosed. Malcolm Bricklin, who is planning to import the Chery (or whatever it’s going to be called now), is moving ahead with plans to bring the [...]

20 November 2005

The other day we mentioned the lawsuit Yamaha had against Patriot motorcycles and Yamoto motorcycles of China for copying Yamaha’s products. Looks like they settled with Patriot, however the lawsuit against Yamoto still stands.

Yamaha suing Patriot Motorcycles over Yamoto

16 November 2005

There’s an interesting lawsuit going on between Yamaha Motor Corporation and Patriot Motorcycles Corporation over the offroad motorcycles and ATVs sold by Patriot under the Yamoto brand name. Yamoto is a Chinese company making what is alleged to be a knockoff of Yamaha motorcycles, using both a similar name, design and color scheme that [...]

More automatic motorcycles - now from China

25 October 2005

Had an interesting comment yesterday on my post about the Honda DN-01 automatic sports cruiser. Tom mentioned a motorcycle built in China, the CFMoto V5. (That’s version 5, not a V5 engine, don’t get excited) I had never heard of it, so I took a look. If you jump over to their (very slow) site, [...]
