V-Quad just before the Bonneville record
The V-Quad engine, basically a side by side V-Twin, that Greg Nelson produces, was installed in a custom motorcycle built by Brouhard Design for owner Mike Maggio. They took it to Bonneville recently and Maggio ran 164.172 mph for a new record in the APGU class. This is an open motorcycle (no fairings or streamlining), push rod, gas, unlimited engine size above 3,000 cc's. This is the production V-Quad engine you can buy. That's a pretty fast run in the wind and on the salt.
Greg says they're already working on an upgrade with plans for 180 mph in October at El Mirage. Sounds to me like it has plenty of power for that cruise around town.

Very nice, but I’d rather have the Feuling W3…if only they were available!
I believe that the “U” unlimited allows one OR two engines, so if one isn’t enough can always add a second V4!
I know that Harley based or powered bikes have a long and impressive history at Bonneville.
Aside from the engine, somehow ……. this just doesn’t seem that noteworthy.
The thing about Bonneville that confuses me is the sheer number of classes and it seems there are more all of the time. There are records for everything. It’s not that they are not noteworthy, but sometimes it seems like the Guinness Book of World Records. One of these days I’m going to have to sit down and sort the whole thing out.
I agree …. Bonneville is a huge catch all for motor sports enthusiasts.
The great thing about it is how they find a way to make it accessible to so many.
Downside for the outside observer is confusion …. I think it would make a great series of posts to try to sort it out.
I think I’ll do some reading on it myself.
Cheers!
Are these engines still firing two cylinders at once? The mp3 on their website sounds just like a normal HD 45 degree twin, or am I missing something? I expected a different exhaust note altogether if the cranks were 180 or 360 degrees apart. 360 would be the most logical. If it is firing pairs together then did they not take the easy path?
Well I am not impressed. I have a 700cc V-4 Magna and they clocked it at 163 mph in 1987. I am sure they will have problem with an air cooled V-4 when all other V-4’s are water cooled. DUH!
OH WELL they’ll learn.
