What Are Your Questions for Erik Buell?
July 25th, 2007 at 3:36 pm by Paul Crowe - "The Kneeslider"
With the recent introduction of the Buell 1125R, Buell Motorcycles has taken a dramatic step in a new direction. I’ll be talking to Erik Buell very soon and I thought it would be a great opportunity for many of you to send in your questions. What would you like to ask Erik? Obviously, he’s not going to lay out the company’s plans for the future but he may hint at a few new ideas or he might expand on his reasoning or thoughts about the new bike and where he thinks Buell fits into the future motorcycle market, … maybe your future, too. So let’s hear it.
Just send your question for Erik to:
UPDATE 2: Thanks to everyone for their input. I am no longer accepting questions. I’ll be posting the interview soon.
This email address will only be active for a short while so come up with some good ones and we’ll see what Erik has to say.
UPDATE: Lots of questions so far, keep them coming and a reminder, DO NOT leave your questions in the comments. It is far easier to sort through everything in the email. Thanks.
UPDATE 3 Read the Erik Buell interview

i’d really like to see more dealerships selling buells. and i’m sure it’s not easy, but i’d like to see the HD attitude towards buells improve. some dealers are great… others could be a bit more enthusiastic to say the least.

Are there any plans to open some Buell-only dealerships? In my opinion, Buells and Harleys are like water and oil; they don’t mix. The style, culture and rider demographic are all different (except for the Uly, maybe). Why have them competing for limited floor space at a Harley dealership? I think more potential buyers would visit a Buell dealership if you removed the Harley element.

Please ask him about the future of Buell’s relationship to The Motor Company, if the decision to use the Rotax power plant signals a move away from HD.
I suppose this fits with the question about Buell-only dealerships…

Just got my September issue of American Motorcyclist. Love the new 1125. It’s got my attention. But I’m more intrested in the ulysses. I think I spelled that right. Being fifty three years young I need something more for the long haul. If in the future he decides to put that rotax motor in the ulysses. I’ll probably knock people out of the way to place my order.

I have a question for Buell Motorcycles regarding the new water cooled sport
bike. Why do you have the primary gearing list wrong?? A common mistake
but, it should be corrected. Look at it again. Don’t blow this off. Look. Then
please correct you website.
Just to cross check. My figures with corrected primary ratio, shows a top
speed of approx. 141 mph at peak power and 151 at red line in 6th. I love
the new bike. I have been riding Harleys for about 40 years. I hope to see a
sport touring version of this new Buell and a police version of the V-Rod.
My slide rule still works!

I would like to buy a 1125R. My height is 5″1″. Can 1125R be lowered to 25 - 26 inches. I do not mind loosing some of the athletic stantz. I currently ride a low 2007 Blast. I do not want to switch over to a typical Harley. I watch my girlfriends ride their Sportsters on corners and parking lots and my Blast is more agile. Diane

Just a couple of comments:
I checked out the 1125R yesterday at the local Buell/Harley dealership in Rapid City. The Buell Harley mix is still alive, they sucked knowing about the bike. But they are a nice enough dealership. I don’t plan on buying another Buell as of yet due to my last 1986 S1 being in the shop more than I actually got to ride it. It was definitely the most fun bike I have ever owned even if it broke alot. But anyway, the 1125R is a really good looking bike. I just had a couple of questions on why some things were designed the way they were. The battery is sitting up under the passenger seat. Mass centralization would dictate otherwise. What gives? When I sat on the bike the top of my foot hit the bottom of the engine because of the brake pedal being positioned where it was, very annoying. Plus the pedal itself is not very wide so it can’t really be cheated. I figure most people will put an aftermarket exhaust on. But there isn’t really any clearance between the stock exhaust and the tire. The the rear brake line is pretty much in line with the exhaust to heat the brake fluid up. Maybe not, but it seems like the bike runs a little hot. I don’t use the rear brake on bikes that much but I am sure some people still do. Sorry, I just see some of these items that make me have questions etc…. I really do like the look of the bike though, much better in person than pics give it credit. Can’t wait to take one out and see how the handling is also.

Got the opportunity to ride the 1125 at a track day last September. First of all, Buell staff and factory guys were professional, helpful, and approachable - give those guys a raise, Eric! I own an XB12, so was able to compare the two on the track. If the intent of the track day was to get folks on the bikes, so they’d want to buy them, IT WORKED!. Handling, power band, gearbox, all improved over the XB. Will Buell offer ‘race only’ parts for this model? Specifically, exhaust? Sorry, but the factory model is way too quiet (and heavy).

Would like to talk to Buell Engine Engineer. Specifically, will the stock muffler handle race ecm and high flow filter? No discussions about this combination. Thanks for the op. T-Bone.
