Ilmor Cutting Back While Looking for Sponsors

Ilmor is slimming down their personnel while they line up more sponsorship for their MotoGP racing project. Ilmor, builders of some pretty fancy equipment in the world of auto racing, is working hard to get things running smoothly in their MotoGP effort. They withdrew after one race this season and the reason is sponsorship. Though things have not been performing at the level they had hoped, progress is still being made but racing on this level is anything but cheap. No sponsors, no racing. Though not racing, engine development will continue.

Riders Jeremy McWilliams and Andrew Pitt remain under contract with the team, despite there being no firm plans for Ilmor GP’s return to the World Championship. “Both Andrew and Jeremy have done a fantastic job for Ilmor GP under difficult circumstances and I want to thank them for their on-going patience and understanding,” enthused Illien. “If all goes to plan and we manage to secure the funding to get back out for the remainder of the 2007 season then of course I would love to have both riders back on board."

I hope they get back in the hunt. Ilmor's engine development expertise offers the opportunity to see something outside the fare offered by the usual factory efforts, but even with the skill, it's a pretty pricey sport.

These guys rock, you can only imagine what might happen if they appealed for public funding.
