Roland Sands KRV5 Tracker
September 6th, 2006 at 3:25 pm by Paul Crowe - "The Kneeslider"![]()
The KRV5 Tracker by Roland Sands took 9th place in the 2006 World Championship Of Custom Bike Building held at Sturgis this year. As we noted previously, this bike is powered by a Kenny Roberts V5 MotoGP engine. The front end is a modified GSXR1000 unit with Performance Machine wheels all around and the PM brakes, emulating the original board trackers, are at the rear only!
Nice looking and very interesting, but after building the very functional No Regrets and RSD Grunt, don’t you think a 200hp V5 MotoGP engine would really go well in a more functional custom?

I have a hard time understanding why you would build a bike that no one in their right mind would even begin to try to push it to the limit. A board racer was a crazy idea back when they were dealing with sub 40 hp….but 200????

I’m not sure whose idea it was first (Roland or Kenny Roberts), but the thought was that the original sportbike was a board tracker. So, the 2 of them liked the idea of paying tribute to that style with this engine.
I believe Kenny initiated the whole deal.
Just run this thing around one of the high bank speedways as the new “board track”

it may be more practical and functional than at least one bike from roberts past…. the tz750 dirttracker had similar power (ok, 150ish but with a two stroke “kick” to the powerband) and less brakes!

It’s just built for show.
And as with anything built for show, it is truely a triumph of visual pose over dynamic enjoyment.
Each to their own…

It’s not a chopper. Therefore it rules. But I do look forward to a time when there is enough variety in the custom scene for ‘it’s not a/an X’ to be an insufficient cause for praise.

why use USD forks if you don’t have front brakes? I guess styling was more important.

I have enjoyed many of Roland’s designs but this thing is just plain ugly.
Come on Roland, this is a great engine, give it a chassis that can make use of it, not to mention give it some decent looks. PLEASE.

Glad everyone likes the motor,it took a while to bolt it together what with it being shiny an all!.personally I think the bike looks awesome,a real peice of motoart.

Looks to me like Roland took some design ideas from Roger Allmonds Ducati chassis.

I have full respect for Roland Sands…and this design is definitely unique…but stopping power on the front wheels are entremely important to control 200 raw bhp….6 calipered Twin Disk Brakes from Brembo could make it more reliable
