Riding Season Officially Begins

May 29th, 2006 by Paul Crowe - "The Kneeslider"

OK, riding season is really any day the temperature is high enough, but in the northern hemisphere and especially here in the U.S., the Memorial Day weekend is taken as the start of the summer season and riding is in full swing. Temperatures are doing their part with 80s even in the northern states and the roads are absolutely filled with motorcycles. Even those folks who confine their riding to perfect days have little reason to leave the bike idle.

What are you waiting for? Go for a ride. See you tomorrow.

It was 101 in Grand Rapids, Michigan yesterday. That’s too hot for this northern boy to put on gear and go riding. I stayed inside and watched world superbike.

I do feel sorry for those afflicted with this Phenomenon, as I live in Central Florida and ride my bike to work every day of the week, all year long. It does occasionally get cold, but not unbearably so, and I do get wet every now and then, and it does get hot sometimes…but not too hot to use the proper gear, but best of all…it’s always motorcycle season here :)

Um… I live in Vermont, and I’ve been riding for over two months.

But that said, yeah, there was an enormous number of bikes on the roads this weekend. And a 20-year-old kid on a Ninja got killed yesterday a few hundred yards from my house when a car made a left turn in his path. I saw the accident scene; it was a mess.

    Everyone be careful out there.

The title was sort of tongue in cheek, lots of us look for a warm day in January to fire things up and get the wheels rolling, but like the “beginning of summer” or “beginning of the swimming season” it gets folks thinking again about motorcycles on the road. You’re right, be careful out there.

And C.J., about your year round riding season, … you’re just trying to make us northerners feel bad :-)

california baby, temperate and mild all year ’round. I don’t really even have a car.

Not California. Lots of GoreTex, no car.

I did notice a huge influx of bikes over these last few weeks. We are already planning ‘extended lunches’ for the bikers at work. a few weeks ago we did a ride to lake tahoe for lunch. that was fun. it wasn’t until I got back that I learned 3 of the 7 bikers had just gotten their license within the last week. so take it easy and stay safe!
