Revenge – Transverse V-Twin

Revenge - transverse V-twin custom

Winner of 3rd place in the 2006 European Championship for custom bike building was this bike named Revenge. Whether you like this style or not, the interesting thing is the transverse Harley Davidson V-twin engine mated to a BMW transmission with shaft drive. It also has perimeter disc brakes, pretty neat. I just hope those steel braided hand grips don't start to fray, ouch!

C. J. Luke, III 05.05.06 at 1:33 pm: Well…..maybe as “pure mechanical art”, but as any kind of practical design…can you imagine trying to ride that bike for more than just a few minutes??? Look at where the “naked” exhaust pipes are…rosted thigh comming right up

Moto Guzzi has been building bikes with this layout for years. Honda even tried it with their Silver Wing back in the early 1980s. I love the look, although I can’t say I’m a huge fan of shaft drive (which is part of why I never loved Guzzis or the S’Wing either). Surely someone could figure out how to make a transverse V-twin with chain or belt drive.

If this thing got third, though, I’d *love* to see what got first and second. This bike is definitely art.

aaron 05.05.06 at 7:54 pm: there were a few bikes with this engine layout way back when… my favorite? the victoria bergmeister. a cute little european bike that’ll be outnumbered by “exclusive” bikes like mv agustas and manx nortons at any vintage rally in north america.

It’s definitely art.
The dagmar on the front end of the crank is probably the neatest bit of engine deco I’ve seen in a long time (even better if it spins when the engine is running). It really makes the engine/transmission a “single piece” visually.
Wow.

PS. There’s no way any actual human being could ride that beautiful monstrosity long enough to induce wear on the grips.
Mad Scientist Matt 05.09.06 at 11:02 am: Interesting. I’ve just bought a Honda CX500 with the same drive layout, and wondered what a transverse V based chopper would look like. Glad to see I’m not the only one who wondered that.
