Smartuki evolves
November 11th, 2005 by Paul Crowe - "The Kneeslider"
When I mentioned the other day the original Smartuki had gone to Sweden, Andreas, the current owner, was kind enough to send along an update with a few photos to let us know how things were progressing. Andreas had orignally planned to build another Smart car project with a Kawasaki ZZR1100 engine but time constraints moved him in another direction. Since Peter Bee was selling Smartuki, Andreas thought is might make a great starting point.
Taking things totally apart, he decided to replace, upgrade and add additional components. He’s already built a rollcage, something more than a few folks have said would be a good idea for the Smart which is a little tall and short wheelbased. He’s also adding racing seats, 4 point harness and he’s replaced the brakes with Audi units allowing a 5 bolt wheel. He has both 17 inch BBS wheels for the street and 15 inch wheels with slicks for amusement.
With the Swedish winter coming on he has a superb garage project to keep him occupied. We’ll be getting updates as things progress and Andreas said he’s planning for a March or April completion after the snow gets off the roads and he can see what all of this wrenching has created. I know we can’t wait to see it and Andreas has already mentioned more than a little anticipation himself. Stay tuned.
