Hit-Air Air Bag Jacket

May 28th, 2005 by Paul Crowe - "The Kneeslider"

Hit Air JacketCars have airbags, why not motorcycles? Well, there’s the issue of where would you put it and of course, riders often separate from their bike when an accident occurs. Mugen Denko of Japan created the Hit Air jacket to solve those problems. It’s a jacket system that has armor for places like shoulders and elbows and an inflatable bladder that protects the neck, chest, back and hips. You connect a safety key to your bike with a cable which pulls a pin from the jacket in the event you leave the bike. It’s a pretty neat idea. They had an earlier version called the Eggshell jacket, the Hit-Air is their latest. It comes in several styles. If it deploys, it’s reusable after you repack and replace the cartridge. I like it.

There have been a lot of advances in motorcycle protective gear over the years and this looks like it might help. Can’t say how well it would do in a severe impact but any protection is better than none and this might make many crashes injury free when without it you might get banged up quite a bit. Worth a look.

I’ve had one for three years, which I had to order from the company HQ in Japan before the jackets were available here. Simply put, I love it. Made of good materials — as good as you’ll find in most jackets — you would never know it’s an air-bag jacket. Fits comfortably and once you get used to “clicking in” to your bike, it’s not a problem. In fact, it’s just like putting your seatbelt on in the car. After a while, it becomes second nature. The airbag won’t go off if you simply forget to unhook and start to walk off with the cord still attached. I’ve done it a few times with no problem. I commend this company for advancing motorcycle safey and (FINALLY) breaking into the lawsuit-happy US market.

I’m just starting out riding and anything that will keep me not dead is looking really good right now. I’ve been reading about these jackets, but I can’t find a place/website that sells them. Can anyone post that info? Thanks

A motorcyclist’s life was saved in Baltimore recently while wearing an airbag jacket.

The Baltimore case was with an Impact brand jacket but the concept is the same. I some times wonder why the hit air is so much cheaper or, conversely, why the Impact is so friggin expensive.

Still looking for a US supplier of these airbag style jackets …that have female jackets, or at the very least, small and medium sized men’s jackets!

    Anyone???

Where can you purchase an airjacket in the
    US?
