Last week, the House of Representatives passed a “Buy American” bill to require the Department of Homeland Security to only buy products with more than 50% of their components mined, produced or manufactured in the United States. As one tech trade representative said, they won’t be using computers or cell phones since none meet that standard. One more example of blunt force legislation to deal with an emotional issue.
We have long since passed the point where global isolation is possible. As I have stated before on the issue of Chinese motorcycles or cars, blatant ripoffs of someone else’s design is wrong and should be forcefully resisted, but that is not the same as saying do not buy Chinese cars and mototcycles. If they produce a quality product at a great price, fine. We benefit from the lower cost and can use the dollars saved on other things.
American companies and individuals need to realize that another billion or so people have entered the world market as both producers and consumers in a big way. Everyone, not just in the United States, needs to face the new math. Work hard, work smart, be creative.
