Haybusa engine plus salt equals 331mph

by Paul Crowe - "The Kneeslider" on April 21, 2005

in Motorcycle Racing

This is just one more example of what you can do with a Hayabusa engine, a welder, skill and the desire to go really fast. Rick Yacoucci has been going to the salt for some years. Last year he went 331mph. Rick previously raced a Hayabusa but it looks like he decided a special purpose [...]

Motorcycles and expensive gas

by Paul Crowe - "The Kneeslider" on April 20, 2005

in Motorcycle Business

Those not so great sales and earnings numbers I’ve mentioned in the past week make me wonder, why aren’t motorcycles selling in greater numbers due to the price of gas alone? If we can get 40 or 50mpg and sometimes far more, that alone should help sales especially with many motorcycles being far less expensive [...]

Vehicle sales are off, cars, too.

by Paul Crowe - "The Kneeslider" on April 19, 2005

in Motorcycle Business

Over the last week we’ve seen Harley Davidson announce lowered earnings and expectations and Yamaha said their production and exports were down, today, General Motors announced they lost $1.1 Billion in the first quarter. Talk is of closing up to 4 plants and cutting 20,000 to 30,000 jobs along with dropping the Buick brand. Wow.

Baseball, Golf and Motorcycle Racing

by Paul Crowe - "The Kneeslider" on April 19, 2005

in Alternative thinking, Motorcycle Racing, Science frontiers

There are many differing views on this topic but as soon as the government gets involved in defining what’s fair, watch out. An [...]

Make magazine motorcycle hacks

by Paul Crowe - "The Kneeslider" on April 18, 2005

in Workshop & Tools

I mentioned Make magazine some time back. It’s dedicated to the person who just can’t leave well enough alone and keeps asking, “What if?” They’ve just completed their second issue and their third issue is going to have a transportation section. In the meantime, if you have some ideas for car and transportation hacking, you [...]

Rocket bike

by Paul Crowe - "The Kneeslider" on April 18, 2005

in Alternative thinking, Workshop & Tools

What happens if you take a bicycle and strap on a rocket? Donald Pottier did just that and set a new record at 242.61kph (that’s 150.75 mph). Now, I’ve had my ZX11 up at that speed but a bicycle? Hmm… I didn’t know there were any Z-rated bicycle tires. A man and his workshop can [...]

X Plane flight simulator software

by Paul Crowe - "The Kneeslider" on April 17, 2005

in Down Time, Science frontiers

OK, why is The Kneeslider doing a post about flight simulator software? Besides the fact that X-Plane is the most unbelieveable software available for absolutely realistic flight simulations, I believe Kneeslider readers might enjoy the technical beauty of this. After all, you can get heads up displays for your motorcycle helmet and those are [...]

Yamaha output down

by Paul Crowe - "The Kneeslider" on April 16, 2005

in Motorcycle Business

After the Harley report a few days ago, Yamaha is saying it produced about a third less motorcycles over the last 11 months and exported 30% less. As I suspected, the motorcycle market is getting soft.
